We had a chance to work with the Lovely Ms. Ginny Phillips and we are thrilled to have the chance to ask her a few questions!:

1.)   Tell us a bit about your background. Where are you from and how did you get your start in photography?

I am Ginny Phillips and I'm 29. :)  My family and I just recently moved to Nashville, TN a few months ago and we lived in the Memphis area for several years before that.  I have been officially doing weddings and photography for about 8 years now, but I grew up learning about photography all the time.  I really started getting in to it around age 14.  My parents let me convert a big closet in the basement of our house into a darkroom...I used all of my grandfather's equipment.  He was an amateur photog and did some pretty cool stuff himself, so I inherited all of his darkroom goods and a vintage camera or two.  My dad gave me his old Canon AE-1 from the late 70's and so I learned with all manual settings and then developed some of my own photos.  Film is spectacular!

My childhood friend Mallory (who is also a photographer now) and I used to practice on each other everywhere we went...out in the field, in our basement balancing old second-hand studio lights on our shoulder while we snapped a shot...we just wanted to learn everything about composition and lighting and film.  Fun times!

2.)   If there is one thing you want us to know about you what would it be?

God has blessed me, and the best thing about me is my family.  Been married to my husband Matt for almost 8 years and we have 2 beautiful and quirky children.  London is 4 and Jude is 2 :)

3.)   Are there any memorable images or shoots you could share with us? What made them special for you?

One of my fave shoots ever was a client and her family who requested a truly vintage photoshoot.  She gathered clothing and props and we went to downtown Memphis in the area of the Lorraine Motel where time has stood still since MLK was shot there many years ago.  The area even still has old cars in the parking lot...diners, etc that all look from the 50s and 60s.  She did their hair up good and the pictures were super fun!  I love different things like that and clients who are really creative!  And of course I love all the shoots of my kids ;)

4.)   Where do you find inspiration to keep your photography creative and unique?

Just other amazing photographers and I have a lot of exceptional photog friends.  We shoot for each other, assist each other in the past, etc.

The internet is a huge source for inspiration as well.  With so many state-of-the-art cameras out there it seems professional photographers aren't as rare as they were when I first started...just make sure if you ever book someone they know what they're doing and don't just rely on their camera ;)

5.)   Please describe your photography style to our readers.

I just love happy, natural photos.  I love crisp lines, lots of color, and just capturing the trueness of people.  I only use props for shoots like newborns or seniors...and even then I like to limit it as much as I can to get a more natural effect.  When someone looks at their wedding pictures, senior pictures or maybe a photoshoot of their kid several years from now I want them to remember the PERSON and their quirks at the time.  I also like a bit of vintage flair :)

6.)    Tell us about your child/children? What do you admire most about them?

Oh me.  Well, like I said before, London is 4 years old and it truly a firecracker...she is super sweet and we try to teach her to be kind and to love God.  She loves her friends and is VERY girly, even though we never taught her that!  I think she came out loving pink!  She is truly super smart and therefore hilarious and super quirky.  I just want her to be kind, respectful, love Jesus and have all those little fun characteristics of hers rolled into one.  She is the kind of kid that says hello to random people in Target and then proceeds to tell them all about herself.

Jude just turned 2 and he's a momma's boy through and through.  Since he's younger its harder to know how he is going to be, but he is obsessed with giving kisses (especially when he knows he's in trouble...no joke.)  He loves all animals, it doesn't matter what kind...goats, dogs, worms, whatever...he will try to hug them.  He has always had his own opinions and thinks its cool to scream a lot lately when he is mad...hopefully just a phase?  ;)  He loves to cuddle and I love that about him.  He's a sweetheart and a fireball at the same time!

7.)   Where can readers find you on the web?

I have a website www.ginnyphillipsphotography.com and a blog with more recent work, www.ginnyphillipsphotography.com.blog.  Also a facebook page that I don't update nearly as much as I should.  Just search Ginny Phillips Photography.
